Past Events

Rochester Retreat, Aug 1-4 (Thu-Sun): Swami and some devotees travelled to Rochester New York for the Annual Scriptural Study Retreat organized by Vedanta Society of Rochester. The topic for this year was ‘Taittiriya Upanisad, Chapter II. Swami Yogatmananda gave classes on this; Swami Kripamayananda spoke about the Integration of Yogas and other important spiritual lessons from life-stories. This year the participation was highest – over 55. Swami returned on the night of Sun Aug 4.

 Aug 6-10 (Tue-Sat): Children’s Day-camp; 9 am to 4:00 pm
Seventeen children participated. Activities included Yoga, tie-dye art, Diamante poetry, daily games and recess, stories from the Mahabharata told by Swami Yogatmananda, and a session on robotics led by two of the campers. Friday added a field trip to Brown University’s Robotics lab or the local children’s museum. The week-long camp concluded Saturday August 10th with the traditional Showcase for parents and guests. The Showcase included robotics and hydraulics demonstrations and a traditional Indian dance all developed and given by the campers. A student-led Sanskrit chant followed and the Showcase concluded with the performance of a Mahabharata-themed play authored and directed by Gnana Prasoona.

 Sun Aug 11: Swami, with a few devotees traveled to Monroe, NJ to a devotee’s home to conduct a retreat on Sri Ramakrishna Stotram composed by Swami Vivekananda. Over 40 attended.

 Sat Aug 17, 10 am to 4:00 pm: Annual Retreat of Vedanta Society of CT  was conducted by the Swami at 100 Cherry Brook Rd, Canton, CT. The daylong retreat was on the theme of SURRENDER. 45 attended.

 Sat Aug 24, 11 am to 3:30 pm: Krishna Festival. Early morning worship, singing of hymns, devotional songs, reading, discourse by Shuddhatmaprana and after food-offering and Arati, everyone partook the Prasad-lunch. After that the well-known music group ‘Chinmay Swaranjali’ gave a concert of devotional music. Over 100 attended.

 Sun Aug 25, 10 am to noon: Special Service at Annisquam Village Church, 820 Washington St, Gloucester, MA to commemorate Vivekananda’s lecture there on Aug 27, 1893. Over 150 attended the program containing prayers, readings, music, speeches. A tour of the places associated with Vivekananda took place after a sumptuous lunch.

On Aug 6 and 13 were discussed briefly excerpts from 2 of Meister Eckhart’s sermons. 1. ‘Nothing Above the Soul’ and 2. ‘Being is More than Life’. On 20th , Meister Eckhart’s DEFENCE  at the Inquisition.
